Batir ReducedJoe Batir, a senior majoring in geology from Channahon, IL is a 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholar, and a 2009 Fulbright Scholar. Joe plans to pursue a Master of Science degree in Geothermal energy resources at The School for Renewable Energy Science in Akureyri, Iceland and his PhD at Southern Methodist University.

Furby reduced Lisa Furby, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering from Carbondale, IL was names to the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. She is one of just sixty students selected nationwide each year. She plans to obtain a PhD and continue to conduct research in the biomedical field.

Goodin ReducedSean Goodin, a senior majoring in physiology and philosophy from Red Bud, IL was named to the 2009 USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. He is one of just sixty students selected nationwide each year. Sean plans to pursue either a PhD or medical degree.

Williams reducedChris Williams, a senior majoring in civil engineering from West Frankfort, IL was awarded a 2009 Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. Chris is one of just sixty students chosen nationwide each year. He plans to obtain a Master of Science followed by a

2008 Morris K. Udall Scholar

Joe Batir Joe Batir, a junior majoring in geology from Channahon, IL has been named a 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholar. Joe plans to conduct research to improve and promote the increased use of non-invasive geophysical data collection and manipulation techniques. The data from his research will be used for detection of pollutants in ground water and other environmental remediation projects.

Jared Burde, a senior majoring in physics and electrical engineering from Carbondale, IL has been awarded a 2008 Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. Jared plans to conduct research on the process of adsorption on carbon nanostructures with a strong focus on developing applications for filtration and chemical detection at Michigan State University.

Jared plans to conduct research on the process of adsorption on carbon nanostructures with a strong focus on developing applications for filtration and chemical detection at a major research university.

Fahran Robb USA today 2006Erin Shanle, a junior majoring in biochemistry from Cobden, IL has been named a 2007 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. Erin plans to conduct biochemical research and teach others the skills necessary to advance research in the field.

She plans to pursue graduate studies aiming for joint degrees in agribusiness economics and law.

Kathleen Lask Barry M. Goldwater 2006Kathleen Lask, a sophomore majoring in physics and mathematics from Mendon, IL has been named a 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. Kathleen plans to conduct research in new energy sources and/or devices to help developing countries.

Austin Moore Barry M. Goldwater 2006Austin Mohr, a junior majoring in mathematics and computer science from Marion, IL has been named a 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar. Austin plans to conduct research to implement algorithms using computer languages for research in combinatorial analysis and other areas of pure mathematics.

Donald TempinsonDonald Tempinson, a junior majoring in civil engineering from Lebanon, Illinois won a "rising junior" scholarship from the Department of Homeland Security. His long-range goal is to obtain his doctorate and design bridges.

Fahran RobbFahran Robb, a sophomore majoring in political science and agricultural systems from Pinckneyville, IL is a 2005 Morris K. Udall Honorable Mention Scholar recipient. Her long-range goal is to obtain a doctorate and become a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. for environmental and agricultural issues.

Teresa GisburneTeresa Gisburne, a junior majoring in zoology, is Southern Illinois University Carbondale's first-ever Goldwater Scholar. Teresa, from Elmhurst, IL plans to specialize in mammalogy. Her long-range goal is to obtain her doctorate and conduct research.

Raphi RechitskyRaphi Rechitsky, a junior majoring in sociology and philosophy from Northbrook, IL is the University's first-ever Morris K. Udall Scholar. Raphi is one of only 80 undergraduate students nationwide to win a prestigious Udall Foundation Scholarship.
